The UN Security Council has expressed concern for "Muslim worshippers" in Jerusalem - but not for Jewish worshippers in Jerusalem. The sentiment comes in a press statement issued on September 17, 2015 by this month's Security Council President Vitaly Churkin of Russia.

The Council press statement says: "The members of the Security Council underscored that Muslim worshippers at the Haram al-Sharif must be allowed to worship in peace, free from violence, threats and provocations." The press statement makes no mention of the violence and threats against Jewish worshippers at the Temple Mount, or the murder of a Jewish man by Arab rock throwers on one of Judaism's holiest days of the year, Rosh Hashana. The Security Council further minimized the Temple Mount's status as the holiest site in Judaism by referring to it only by its Muslim name, Haram al-Sharif.

The press statement also failed to condemn the antisemitic statements of Mahmoud Abbas on September 16, 2015 that Jews "have no right to dirty the mosque with their filthy feet." Instead, the press statement merely states: "The members of the Security Council called for the exercise of restraint, refraining from provocative actions and rhetoric and upholding unchanged the historic status quo at the Haram al-Sharif - in word and in practice."

The statement would only have been issued after the active participation of the United States, a member of the Security Council. Why does Ambassador Samantha Power believe this was acceptable?
