Only Country Specific (Against Israel) Resolution at UN Commission on the Status of Women Adopted by Overwhelming Majority

On March 24, 2016, the last day of the 60th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the only country-specific resolution "Situation of and assistance to Palestinian women" was adopted by an overwhelming majority.

The vote breakdown was as follows:

In favor: 20 (Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, China, Colombia, Congo, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russian Federation, Sudan, Tajikistan, Uruguay)

Against: 2 (Israel, United States)

Abstentions: 11 (Albania, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Finland, Germany, Japan, Liechtenstein, Republic of Korea, Spain, Switzerland)

The Palestinian representative made a general statement after the vote.

In her words:

"As of now we are witnessing an escalation of violence and terror as a result of the continued Israeli occupation and its crime committed against the Palestinian people. .. Israel, the occupying power attempts by escalating its policies and practices of aggression, discrimination and terror and ... of human rights, to attempt to silence our voices..."
