The UN playing field for genocidal maniacs

Friday, October 28, 2005

Tuesday, October 20, 2005 Iran introduced a resolution at the General Assembly called "the Global Agenda for Dialogue among Civilizations." Congratulations all round as Iranian representative, Javad Zarif said:

"[T]he challenges faced today were multifaceted and old approaches based on power and exclusion had proven insufficient, and in most cases inappropriate. Such approaches had even led to the exacerbation of tension by widening the divide, marginalizing and alienating significant portions of the global population, and providing fertile ground for the spread of hatred and violence. [There was] the need for a new paradigm, based on the belief that each civilization had much to offer and that inclusion would bring with it mutual enrichment and benefit. The Global Agenda...was a milestone in the collective effort to elaborate that new paradigm."

The resolution was adopted unanimously.

Oops. Fast-forward a grand total of 6 days later, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivers a speech in Teheran at a conference called "A World Without Zionism." As reported by Aljazeera, the speech included:

As the Imam [Ayat Allah Khomeini] said, Israel must be wiped off the map...[T]he annihilation of the Zionist regime will come....The Islamic umma [community] will not allow its historic enemy to live in its heartland...Any leaders in the Islamic umma who recognise Israel face the wrath of their own people. [This is a] historic war. It dates backs hundreds of years. Sometimes Islam has advanced. Sometimes nobody was winning. Unfortunately over the past 300 years, the world of Islam has been in retreat...The skirmishes in the occupied land are part of a war of destiny. The outcome of hundreds of years of war will be defined in Palestinian land....One hundred years ago the last trench of Islam fell, when the oppressors went towards the creation the Zionist regime. It is using it as a fort to spread its aims in the heart of the Islamic world.

According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), he added that "a world without the US would be possible."

Kudos to Iran for stringing along all 190 other UN states.
